Mobility Clinics in South Africa

In 2019 Össur South Africa debuted Mobility Clinics with three respective pilot events held in Stellenbosch, Durban and in Pretoria. These 2-day pilot events combined a mix of presentations from expert guest speakers, various physical activities for amputees to improve their overall mobility, and provided a fun and engaging platform for amputees and their prosthetists to connect and learn from each other.

During each event we witnessed between 15 and 20 amputees, together with their prosthetists, enjoy the chance to improve their overall mobility skills under the guidance of Dr Suzanne Ferreira, an acclaimed sports scientist and South Africa Paralympics coach. Dr Ferreira was joined by sports scientist Sarah Arnolds, Dr Kevin Subban from the Prime Human Performance Institute, Prof Wayne Derman from the University of Stellenbosch’s Institute for Sports and Exercise Medicine, Dr Carolette Cloete from the University of Pretoria, as well as an expert team of physiotherapists, biokineticists and prosthetists – all supported by family and friends who were also invited to join.

It was fascinating to witness the commitment of each person who wholeheartedly participated in all of the physical events and the willingness for everyone to share their stories. In the end, all three events transcended physical skills improvement and allowed everyone involved to connect, inspire and be inspired, regardless of whether they are an amputee or not.

Following the overwhelming success and the valuable teachings of the first three pilot events, Össur South Africa, together with our prosthetist-clients, has committed to invest in these events in the long term.
